The marks struck into vintage sterling and Southwestern jewelry — what each one means, who used it, and photographs of the punch on pieces that have passed through here. Every entry is written from a piece we have had in hand, and says plainly where the record runs out.

Maker's marks

The initials, symbols and signatures silversmiths and workshops struck into their own work.

Purity marks

What the metal is: 925 for sterling, 800 and 835 for continental silver, karat marks for gold.

Origin marks

Where a piece was made. Often struck beside a purity mark and mistaken for part of it.
