Handcrafted 'Ocean Curl' Jan Maitland Sterling Silver Cuff Bracelet
- Weight44 g
Description
This Jan Maitland sterling silver cuff bracelet is a striking and unique piece with a rich, historical feel. At 44 grams, the bracelet has a substantial weight and feels comfortable and secure on the wrist. A testament to the enduring appeal of handcrafted jewelry, this piece is one of the artist's best-sellers, each one being hand-made. The design, aptly named "Ocean Curl," is a powerful artistic expression, reminiscent of a single curl of a wave—delicate yet strong, capturing the ebb and flow of changing tides.
This style of jewelry, a cuff bracelet, has a long and storied history, with ancient civilizations from the Egyptians to the Romans wearing them as symbols of wealth and power. However, it was in the mid-20th century that the cuff bracelet truly rose to prominence as a fashion statement, thanks in part to designers who embraced clean lines and bold forms. This particular piece is a true work of art, featuring an anticlastic and hand-hammered design, a technique that creates a graceful, wave-like contour where the metal curves convexly along its length and concavely across its width. The edges of the bracelet curve up for a comfortable fit, showcasing the artist's attention to both aesthetics and wearability.
The bracelet is marked 925 sterling, indicating it is made of 92.5% pure silver, a standard of quality for fine jewelry. It is also signed by the artist, Jan Maitland, giving it a unique provenance. This beautiful cuff measures 5 3/4 inches with an opening of 1 5/16 inches, designed for a comfortable fit. The width of the cuff is 1 inch, elegantly tapering to 7/16 inches, creating a balanced silhouette. This versatile and asymmetrical piece is perfect for any occasion and is sure to be a treasured addition to any jewelry collection.

This one suits wrists from about 6.46" to 6.91". Measure with a tape or a strip of paper, snug against the skin, just below the wrist bone.
Classic comfort fit +0.56" of room
Room to breathe and to move the wrist, without sliding about. This is where most people want to be.
Non-adjustable — solid silver
Thick-gauge sterling does not move by hand, and forcing it work-hardens the shoulders until they crack. Please buy to your measurement rather than planning to adjust it.
How to put a vintage cuff on without bending it
- Turn the cuff so the gap faces the underside of your wrist.
- Rest the opening against the narrowest part — the flat side of the wrist, not the back of the hand.
- Roll it on: slide one terminal past the wrist bone, then rotate the cuff around rather than pushing it straight on.
- Turn the gap back underneath once it is on.
The roll is the whole trick. Pushing a cuff on straight is what makes people force the gap wider, and the silver does not come back.
